The easiest, most consistent way to get an exposed aggregate finish is to place the concrete, spray a retarder on the surface
(1 pound of sugar in a 10 gallons of water), float and trowel the surface, cover the concrete with plastic, and come back 5 or 6
hours later and wash and brush off the cement paste on the surface and exposing the aggregate. This method allows the
concrete to bond with the aggregate so you won't have pockets where the aggregate popped out if you try to wash off the
cement paste by guessing when it is hard enough to wash without using a retarder. Make sure the concrete includes the type of
aggregate you want to expose. If it doesn't, you will have to seed or broadcast the aggregate separately on the surface of the
fresh concrete, jitterbug it in (you should be able to rent a jitterbug at any equipment rental store), then proceed with the
retarder etc. This procedure is the most difficult to accomplish in concrete finishing, even for the professionals.
Concrete is good.
